Nightfyre - From Fortune To Ruin

Nightfyre - From Fortune To Ruin.jpg

So on a monthly Bandcamp exploration, I came across the latest of 2018 releases and when I do that I usually go for the best looking artwork to get me inspired to listen to their album. So when I saw this really easy but somehow very striking artwork, I was looking forward to listen to what Nightfyre had to offer. So when I found out that they make Heavy Metal I was kind of sceptic because I usually don’t listen to that kind of metal besides a few bands but why not give it a chance.

So the band is from Münster, Germany and makes mid ‘80 heavy metal. Fairly young guys but they produce really good old school heavy metal how it should sound. Cheesy lyrics with amazingly riffs. For me (especially with heavy metal) the vocals are the ‘hell yeagh or hell no’ for me. 99% of the bands that make this old school heavy metal like Distillator (The Netherlands) who have like randomly high pitched vocals while his normal voice is one of the best vocals in the Dutch heavy metal/thrash scene. But with Nightfyre I was getting more and more comfortable with David his vocal style. His mid-ranged vocals are a pleasure to (I think) every metalheads their ears. With (probably) every metalheads starting with the usual bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden or King Diamond, I bet that most metalheads will absolutely adore this album. With this album coming out in January 2019, I sadly can’t put this album in my Album Of The Year 2018. That is really sad because I would’ve put it in my top 10 without a doubt.

With a catchy instrumental intro simply called ‘Intro’ ‘From Fortune To Ruin’ starts. From the intro you will absolutely get the idea that this is stripped to the bone old school heavy metal how it was made back in the day. Catchy riffs, bassline that will remind you of the work of Steve Harris. You will get the idea. And then Nightfyre gives you one of the most catchy songs of the whole album ‘Hunting The Night’. What to say what you can’t say about the whole album.

‘Hunting The Night’ is the catchiest song I’ve heard in a very VERY long while. Especially the chorus which is sublime in my opinion. Its one of those songs that will get stuck in your head for the rest of the week. Which it did. Thats why i’m writing this review. So lets get back to the album. From time to time you will hear some riffs that will be best compared to a combination of Iron Maiden and a little bit of Volbeat throughout the whole album. Not like the heavy songs of Volbeat but certainly the melodic parts mixed with the outstanding riffs of Iron Maiden. But what makes me love the whole album I think are the vocals of David and the bass. Little sidenote, they don’t have a bass player as far as I know but it takes skills to produce such bass riffs and put them into an album and don’t let it sound cheesy (in a bad way).

Later on in the album you will hear some melodic ballady kind of riffs accompanied with the lovely thrashing riffs that guide the album towards heavy metal heaven. Alongside memorable solos and riffs that will make you come back to this album over and over again. To conclude the review of Nightfyre ‘From Fortune To Ruin’ let’s say this. This album is a phenomenal album that needs to be heard by many more people. Just take the riffs of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest from the early ‘80’s and give them a modern twist and production and you will have Nightfyre. Maybe add a little twist of Def Leppard and King Diamond and you will be set for
