Lilith - Sell Out

Lilith - Sell Out.jpg

Lilith is a young riot grrrl band from Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Formed in 2015, the three girls decided that the dead genre of Riot Grrrl should be revived. Being a dead genre, it should have some fans around the world right? Yes, and some of them apparently live in The Netherlands because Lilith has struck some people the right way. What is Riot Grrrl like? Well if you take grunge and punk and a dose of feminism alongside in a mixer and the result is Riot Grrrl. Lyrical themes are based on feminism and Lilith certainly has a lot of it in their music. Probably the most known Riot Grrrl band is L7 and Hole.

But what about the music? If you aren’t familiar with the sound of riot grrrl, well after listening to the songs ‘Sex Sells’ and ‘Our Black Hearts’, you will have a great example how it sounds. Very basic sounding riff’s and angry vocals by the bassist Tessa and guitarist Maaike. The two girls mix up their vocals perfectly and make an unique style of music that has been long gone.

What I love about Lilith is that they make a statement but don’t really let it know at their live shows. You will have to discover it from their lyrics. They have got no lyrics on the cd however Tessa and Maaike are very understandable throughout the whole cd. Even when the girls combine their vocals, it doesn’t become a big mashup of noise but a great balanced vocal duet. Very well mixed.

One of the things I absolutely love on this record are the clarity but at the same time raw tone of the bass guitar. It isn’t just on the record that this bass tone is presented but at live shows, Lilith produces not only that bass tone but a great sound. Lilith knows what they’re doing and they just love the genre Riot Grrrl.

But talking about the whole ep ‘Sell Out’. For people who are interested in a raw type of grunge/punk should be really paying attention to Lilith. The three girls certainly have a great future ahead if they make the good choices. By example, I can see them play some underground punk/grunge shows in England or Germany. They have the attitude for those gigs and will build a greater fan base in a short while.

Girls, just keep doing what you love. You have found your sound and don’t chance it. You wouldn’t have come this far by mixing your style over and over again. A solid 9 out of 10. Official Release date will be the 15th of July. Release show will be in Leiden at the Gbr. Nobel venue.
